Peatlands cover only 3% of the Earth's land yet contain twice the
total amount of carbon in the atmosphere. Per hectare, a peatland
can store 30 times more carbon than a healthy tropical rainforest.
But they need our help!
Peatlands are only able to capture carbon when undamaged.
80% of the UK's peatlands are in a damaged and deteriorating
condition. The UK's peatlands have been and are damaged by
a combination of peat extraction, drainage, overgrazing, burning,
forestry, pollution, development and climate change.
This is why peatland restoration is so important
and can have expeditious benefits once it's completed.
